Pakistan is experiencing one of the most alarming consequences of climate change as temperatures continue to rise and heat waves become longer, stronger, and more frequent. Every summer seems hotter than the last, with several cities regularly recording temperatures above 45°C and, in some cases, exceeding 50°C. These extreme weather conditions are no longer rare but an increasingly common reality threatening public health, food security, water resources, economic stability, and the environment. The growing intensity of heat waves shows that climate change is no longer a distant challenge.

The primary reason behind rising temperatures is global climate change. For more than a century, human activities such as burning coal, oil, and natural gas have released enormous amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat, increasing the Earth’s average temperature. Consequently, weather patterns are changing rapidly, bringing more frequent and intense heat waves, floods, droughts, and storms worldwide.

Although Pakistan contributes less than one percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, it remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate change. This reflects the unequal burden of the climate crisis, where nations contributing the least often suffer the most. Pakistan has already experienced devastating floods, prolonged droughts, accelerated glacier melting, irregular rainfall, and increasingly severe heat waves.

Several local factors are worsening the crisis. Rapid urbanization has transformed cities into concrete landscapes where buildings, roads, and pavements absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night. This urban heat island effect makes cities significantly hotter than surrounding rural areas. As green spaces disappear and trees are cleared for development, natural cooling continues to decline.

Deforestation is another major contributor to rising temperatures. Trees regulate the climate by providing shade, absorbing carbon dioxide, and releasing moisture into the atmosphere. However, illegal logging, population growth, and agricultural expansion have significantly reduced forest cover in many parts of Pakistan.

Air pollution further accelerates environmental degradation. Emissions from industries, power plants, vehicles, brick kilns, and crop residue burning increase greenhouse gases, damage public health, and intensify the impacts of climate change.

The effects of rising temperatures extend far beyond uncomfortable weather. Heat waves have become a major public health threat. Hospitals are treating increasing numbers of patients with dehydration, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and cardiovascular complications during extreme heat. Children, older adults, pregnant women, outdoor workers, and people with chronic illnesses are especially vulnerable. Construction workers, farmers, traffic police, delivery riders, and daily wage laborers often have no choice but to work in intense heat.

Agriculture, one of Pakistan’s economic pillars, is also under severe pressure. Rising temperatures increase evaporation, reduce soil moisture, and require more irrigation. Crops including wheat, rice, maize, cotton, and vegetables become increasingly vulnerable to heat stress, reducing yields and threatening food security. Livestock also suffer from extreme heat, resulting in lower milk production, poor health, and financial losses for farmers.The economic impact of extreme heat is equally serious. Greater demand for air conditioning and cooling systems places heavy pressure on Pakistan’s electricity network, often causing power shortages during peak summer months. Roads, railways, and other infrastructure can also deteriorate under prolonged high temperatures, while industrial productivity declines as workers struggle in extreme heat.

Addressing Pakistan’s heat crisis requires a comprehensive national strategy. Expanding renewable energy through solar, wind, and hydropower can reduce dependence on fossil fuels while lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Urban planning should prioritize more parks, tree plantation, wetland conservation, energy-efficient buildings, and sustainable transport systems.

Public awareness is equally important. Citizens can contribute by planting trees, conserving electricity and water, reducing unnecessary vehicle use, avoiding waste burning, and adopting environmentally responsible practices. During heat waves, people should stay hydrated, wear light-colored clothing, avoid going outdoors during the hottest hours, and take special care of children, older adults, and other vulnerable individuals.

Climate change is a global challenge, but Pakistan cannot afford to wait for others to solve it. The country must continue working with the international community while strengthening climate resilience through sustainable development, scientific research, environmental protection, and effective climate-smart policies.

Pakistan’s rising temperatures are a stark reminder that the climate crisis is already affecting everyday life. Every heat wave carries significant human, environmental, and economic costs that cannot be ignored. The decisions made today by governments, businesses, and citizens will determine whether Pakistan adapts successfully to a warming world or faces even greater challenges in the years ahead.
